For more than three centuries since the day when the ships of the East India Companies first brought over the products of the Orient - these charming fabricshave never ceasedto be in favor.The earliest examples were painted entirely by hand,and the wonder is that some of the more complicated patterns were ever finished.But in those days workers and craftmen had infinite patience and people in Europe were willing to wait and pay handsomely for things that were worth while.Later wooden blockswere employed to print the outline of the pattern - the othercolors being filled in with the brush and finally to meet the ever growing demand the entire pattern was printed with hand blocks.It may be of interestto know that a few of old-timePrint Works contemporanies of Oberkampf are still in existence and producing Linens and Cretonnes by the self same Han Block process that prevailed so long ago.
