Costumes of the Plains Indians

The following study has as its chief object not so much the mere descriptions of certain types of garments among the Indians of the Plains as the presentation of a typical trait in material culture and the development of the problems involved. In a former paper on the Material Culture of the Blackfoot Indians some attention was given to the forms and distributions of men s shirts and women s dresses in order to determine the place of Blackfoot culture in the Plains group. This paper presents some of the results obtained by a far more intensive study of specimens from the Plains area as a whole.
