The many possibilities of decorating fabrics by the simple means of needleand thread have always exercised an irresistible attraction. The art of Embroideryis almost prehistoric ; from the earliest times until the present day there has never been an epoch when it has not been more or less in vogue. Whether it will ever again attain to such a marvellous height of perfection as it did in the thirteenth century is a difficult question to decide, but one to which we should not like to give a negative answer. In the early part of the last century the art was perhaps less alive than at any other period of its history, but since then there has been an evident movement in the direction of its revival, and there is every reason to hope that this movement will provepersistent.
