The THISTLE AND ROSE paperweight glass pattern belongs to the Caithness Glass Company. This pattern is a Helen MacDonald design from 1980. Robin Sinclair founded Caithness Glass in Wick, in northeastern Scotland 1961. The company's art glass output did not initially include paperweights, but this would change with the arrival in 1962 of Paul Ysart, who was interested in making millefiori paperweights. When Colin Terris joined Caithness in 1968 to establish an engraving studio, he met Paul, the company's training officer. He soon began experimenting with ideas, techniques, and designs far removed from the conventional style of paperweight design.
