This delightful shallow dish, about 9 inches across, was made at the Fishley Holland Pottery in Somerset, during the 1960's. The Pottery was founded in 1922 by William (Willie) Fishley Holland, and by 1960 the pottery was under the management of his son, also William. The decoration of this jug is typical of many pieces during this period made at Clevedon, and uses the manganese glazes developed and used by George Holland, Willie's other son. The design is fairly detailed, with sgraffito and slip painted flying birds inside a slip trailed border. The Fishley Hollands were family of potters who ran various studios from the 19th century through to 1969. Willie is best known for having taught the young Michael Cardew, but he was a versatile skilled and innovative potter in his own right over his more than 50 year career. The dish is in excellent condition. It is carefully signed "Fishley Holland". I am selling a large collection of Fishley Holland, please see my other items and/or enquire after more if you are interested.
