Thisis a lot of eight (8) figures from Richards Soldiers (RS) Set No. __ – 1 st Rhode Island Regiment, Light Infantry (Negro) Company, 1777. The lot includes an officer, one sergeant with a spontoon, and six (6) other ranks. RS models are 54mm scale figures made in the style of old toy soldiers. RS figures represent regiments from the American Revolution, World War I, and specialty sets from ancient Egyptians to soldiers of the Franco-Prussian War. The models were the creation of Richard Herring, Scarsdale, New York. Mr. Herring produced Herrings and Richards Soldiers from 1977 through the mid-1980s; production was very limited. In original scarlet letter Richards Soldiers, red box of issue; incorrect label . The regiment was formed by the Rhode Island Assembly on May 6, 1775. It became the 9 th Continental Regiment of the Line in 1776 and was reorganized as the 1 st Rhode Regiment in 1777; the reorganized regiment was commanded by Colonel Christopher Green. It was nicknamed the “Black Regiment” as Negroes were recruited for enlistment into the regiment. It was consolidated with the 2 nd Rhode Island Regiment in 1781. The regiment remained in service until November 1783.
