Here we have a small “Albany Slip” crock marked (incised) on the front “Sipe & Son,/Williamsport”. Crock measures 5-3/4” tall and 4-1/4” in diameter and is in very good condition with three flakes out of the backside of the lip, each measuring 1/8” to ¼” across but no other chips, cracks, or other damage. The base of the crock almost has a redware look to it, though I can’t guarantee that it isn’t just discolored. A very cute marked crock from Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Everything I have seen from this company is typically cream colored with blue decoration, so this is a bit of an oddity. The following is a bit of information about the company: The Sipe Pottery of Williamsport, Pennsylvania was founded about 1867 by William Sipe. His two sons, Luther and Oscar joined the firm a bit later and it became known as Sipe and Sons Pottery. Circa 1875 the Sipes were joined by Abram Young and Joseph Nichols and the pottery was operated as Sipe, Nichols & Co until 1877. About that time Nichols left and joined the pottery of Logan Moore and David Hobart. The Sipe Pottery continued to operate until about 1900. Through these periods the pottery produced utilitarian stoneware using these incised marks: SIPE & SON/WMSPORT, PA. (in an arc), SIPE, NICHOLS & CO/WILLIAMSPORT, PA. and SIPE & SONS/WMSPORT, PA.
