Here we have a medium crock or bowl marked (incised) on the front “Sipe & Sons,/Wmsport”. Bowl measures 5-1/2” tall and 10-1/2” in diameter and is in fair condition with several flakes out of the lip and one hairline originating at the lip and traveling 3” down the side of the bowl across but no other chips, cracks, or other damage. A rarely seen utilitarian form from this Pennsylvania potter...most of what I have seen is cream colored with cobalt decoration. The following is a bit of information about the company: The Sipe Pottery of Williamsport, Pennsylvania was founded about 1867 by William Sipe. His two sons, Luther and Oscar joined the firm a bit later and it became known as Sipe and Sons Pottery. Circa 1875 the Sipes were joined by Abram Young and Joseph Nichols and the pottery was operated as Sipe, Nichols & Co until 1877. About that time Nichols left and joined the pottery of Logan Moore and David Hobart. The Sipe Pottery continued to operate until about 1900. Through these periods the pottery produced utilitarian stoneware using these incised marks: SIPE & SON/WMSPORT, PA. (in an arc), SIPE, NICHOLS & CO/WILLIAMSPORT, PA. and SIPE & SONS/WMSPORT, PA. Shipping by the method of your choice-no handling charges. Item guaranteed as described. Let me know if you have any questions. See my other auctions for more neat items.
